The Coefficient of Independence

August 21 – September 17, 2015

Art history is inextricably linked to the history of the evolution of mankind, inventions, and wars. The desire for change and the belief in it releases enormous creative energy.

Artists intuitively foresee public processes, finding sensitive channels for expressing their ideas and experiences.

"The Coefficient of Independence" at American House is dedicated to Ukrainian Independence Day. The exhibition continues the art project, “Practice of evolution,” recently held at the Modern Art Research Institute of the National Academy of Arts in Ukraine (MARI).

MARI and America House united their efforts in exploring topics important for the countries that they represent. Nowadays reflections, research, and thoughts about national identity and individual social awareness are topical for many current trends in contemporary art.

The events of Maidan in Ukraine reflected a universal phenomenon of empathy and mass involvement. In such times, individual egos step aside and all are united with a desire to combat injustice for the sake of their rights and freedoms. Historically, the general emotional exaltation declines after the peak of events, but leaves an impression and inspires a course of personal change.

For some, such events change the meaning of life – one’s own needs become secondary as individuals recognize their role in service to others. For some, it changes an understanding of the value of life; they come to realize their own existential happiness by gradually embodying their dream world in their reality and environment. With such transformations, new types of individuals appear. They are able to further transform the social euphoria from temporary victory to a common conscious and systematic evolutionary changes.
